There are many excellent writers whose books are impossible to find. Their writing is flawless and their skill impressive, but their ability to market is insufficient or nonexistent. Writing the book is just the beginning. If an author does not market his book well, very few people will ever discover it. Therefore, if you have written something worth reading, it is your responsibility to learn how to market your book.
Zig Ziglar said, "If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you."
There are countless resources on the internet where you can begin to learn about marketing, both online and face-to-face. It is your responsibility to educate yourself. Just like you had to learn to write and edit, you must take the final step and learn how to market.
I'm certainly no expert, but I am learning about marketing because I believe I have books that are worth reading. They are Christian historical fiction/romance. The reader of my novels will come away encouraged and hopeful about God's ability and interest to bring His children through the difficult things in life. It also delightfully entertains and many find it hard to put down. It's the kind of book I like to read, so I think others will enjoy it. But no one will ever hear about it if I don't market it.
One of my favorite social media to market in is Twitter. Facebook was great until about a year ago when Facebook made lots of changes. I am not getting the same results as before. But I'm not quite ready to throw in the towel yet. Currently, I'm listening to videos by Mark Dawson from Great Brittain. He has reached a six-figure income using Facebook ads, but he also admits that the changes on Facebook have affected his profit. I've advertised twice on Pinterest with decent results, so that's another good option. Currently, I get the best results from advertising on Amazon. It's more expensive than social media, but the results have made it worth the investment.
I will be sharing my experience with marketing my books at our August 10th ACFW Great Lakes Region meeting in Grand Haven, MI. You do not need to be a member of ACFW to attend this event. If you are a writer and would like to join us, please contact me and I will be happy to share the details with you. Space is limited since we are meeting at a restaurant, so contact me ASAP if you think you'd like to attend.
I'm not a marketing expert. I'm a pastor's wife, a mother of grown children, and a grandmother who has written two books and marketed them online. If I can get good results from my efforts, so can you. I will be sharing what I have learned and what has worked best for me so far. This will be a time to encourage you as a writer that it is possible to be a great writer and a great marketer. Sometimes it's trial and error, but you do learn a lot in the process and it's lots of fun to see your royalties go up.
