First Line Friday #55

This week on First Line Friday I'm featuring the Christmas novel I am currently reading. A Holiday by Gaslight is a Historical Romance by Mimi Matthews that takes place in the 1860s. I'm not one to purchase a book because of its cover, but I have to admit this cover drew my attention and made me want to read the description. I'm at 79% in this book and I've thoroughly enjoyed it.

London, EnglandNovember, 1861

An icy late November breeze rustled the bare branches of the trees along the Serpentine. Hyde Park was practically deserted at this time of morning. And no wonder.

I love Sophie and completely understood why she wanted to end Ned's courtship of her. He never spoke to her. She did all the talking. It was impossible to consider marrying a man she knew virtually nothing about because he didn't share any of his thoughts with her. It didn't matter that he was filthy rich and her father had used her dowry to make improvements on the family estate. She wasn't desperate enough to marry a stranger.I soon fell in love with Ned and understood why he didn't talk to Sophie. I won't give away his reasons, but I understood – and I realized his feelings ran deep. The story develops beautifully. At a house party, Ned has one last chance to win Sophie. Some of the attendees want this couple to marry and some do not. I can't wait to read the rest of this story. Now it’s your turn. First Line Friday is something every reader can participate in. Pick up a book near you. Type the first line in the comments, along with the title of the book and the author.
