First Line Friday #48

It's seldom I find a book that's hard to put down. The one I'm sharing this week has absolutely captured my interest.

The book I'm featuring is "The Love Knot" by one of my favorite authors, Karen Witemeyer. I enjoy her style of writing. This is a novella, only 118 pages. A quick read.It starts out with Claire Nevin leaving her small community to meet a train. She received a letter from her sister who is in some kind of trouble and asks her to meet the train to pick up a package. She should take it to her home and keep it safe. Claire obviously dreads going to town and the reader wonders why. Once she meets the train, Claire encounters two surprises: The package isn't what she thought it would be and it's delivered by the last person in the world she wanted to meet again.

"Claire Nevin frowned at the cheerful white clouds frolicking across the blue sky and tried to close her ears against the melodies the birds insisted on singing in response to the deceptively fine morning." Isn't this just about the best first line ever? I love it! Full of emotion, sarcasm, and wit. It allows the reader to get a glimpse into Claire Nevin's character. Now it’s your turn. First Line Friday is something every reader can participate in. Pick up a book near you. Type the first line in the comments, along with the title of the book and the author.
